LCS Laboratory offers laboratory testing of Water Absorption, Bulk Density, Apparent Porosity, and Apparent Specific Gravity of ceramic and glass tiles. In this test, 5 identical tiles are tested for their ability to retain water inside the open pores. Water absorption is expressed as a percent by weight of water against the dry weight of the individual tiles. Laboratory reports individual test results for each tile as well as the average of 5 measurements. Typical water absorption on non-porous tiles and glass tiles is 0.1-0.5% while the porous products can exhibit water absorption in the range 9-15%.
The test requires 5 tiles. The samples are first dried at 150°C for 24 hours, and then boiled for 5 hours to replace air bubbles from the open pores. Constant measurements of the dry, and wet sample weight are taken to measure sample saturation with water.
